Barney’s Story

Barney was adopted in February 2025 at 13 years old, after his much-loved owner sadly had to move into a nursing home. 

Suddenly, Barney found himself searching for a retirement home of his own.

When he first arrived, he seemed worried and confused. New smells, unfamiliar noises and different people — it was an enormous adjustment for an older dog. Everything he had known had changed.

Barney was also struggling with arthritis, and SGRR stepped in to fund the pain relief he needed. Once his medication began to take effect, there was life in the old boy again. His gentle personality began to shine through, and his confidence slowly grew.

Now, Barney gets excited for his daily walks and happily strolls through his local woods, attracting admiring glances as he proudly swishes his tail. His new owners took things at Barney’s pace, giving him the time, patience and reassurance he needed — and they are all reaping the rewards.

Today, Barney is enjoying the happy, loving retirement he truly deserves.
