Some frequently asked questions

Q.        My circumstances have changed and I need to find a good home for my dog.

A.         All you need to do is contact our co-ordinator nearest to you and they will discuss your problem with you and arrange for your dog to be placed in a suitable home.

Q.        My dog is unruly, won’t come when he’s called and jumps up a lot.

A.         It sounds as if your dog may benefit from some formal training.  The Southern Golden Retriever Society runs training classes at both Wrotham in Kent (contact Mrs Sue Ashley on 01732 846471) and  Hooley in Surrey (contact Mrs Trisha Robinson on 01932 340508).  If you are unable to get to either of these consult your Vet or local library for classes near you, and visit them to see whether their training methods are sympathetic and not heavy-handed.

Q.       I am interested in having a puppy.  Could I get one from Rescue?

A.         We very rarely get puppies.  The Southern Golden Retriever Society keeps a list of members who have puppies for sale.  The person who organises this is Mrs Hilary Male, telephone number 01903 603863.

Q.        I would love to have a dog, but I couldn’t cope with a puppy

A.         The Charity is asked to re-home dogs of varying ages.  We do our best to match the right dog to the right home and for this reason we have to carry out a home visit prior to placing a dog.

Q.        I am of mature years but would love to have a companion.  Would you consider letting me have a dog?

A.         Yes, would would certainly be considered. Sadly, we often have to re-home dogs whose elderly owners have passed away or are no longer able to care for them.  These dogs are themselves of mature years and need someone to love and care for them for the rest of their lives: they usually make excellent companions for people like you. Your local co-ordinator will be happy to discuss this with you.

Q.       I am looking for a dog.  Do I need to contact all of your co-ordinators?

A.        No, all you need to do is contact your nearest co-ordinator as we work as a team.

Q.        Do you have a sanctuary where I can come and look at the dogs?

A.         No.  We try wherever possible to place the dogs straight from their old home into their new one.  There are occasions when this is not possible and we have to place them in a foster home or commercial kennels.   People usually like to see a dog before offering it a home, and the co-ordinator will arrange this.
