| History: |
| Rescue was
first started in 1979 under the auspices of the Southern
Golden Retriever Society and it was from that background
that this charity was formed. In the early days it was
very simplistic to think that all one had to do was place
a dog from one home to another; this is far from the
case. To begin with most people want a well trained young
dog or invariably, a bitch, the sort of dog we all love
to have around us, but we soon found that all dogs for
rehoming did not fall into this category. We soon learned the need to assess both the dogs and the available homes, and the need to match one with the other. The reasons for the need to rehome a dog are many and varied, most owners have genuine reasons why they can no longer give their dog the quality of life it needs. Some need training and much time is spent with the new owners helping them to overcome difficulties and to point them in the direction of suitable training classes. Thankfully most soon settle and respond to their new environment. We do not have a sanctuary or kennels, therefore all our Rescue co-ordinators, who work on a voluntary basis, operate from their own homes, and where possible dogs are transferred direct from their present home to their new home, which causes the least amount of stress to the dog. The area in which we operate is London south of the Thames and the counties of Surrey, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex and Hampshire. Our Rescue co-ordinators are on hand to give advice to owners and can sometimes avoid the necessity of a dog being re-homed. |
